So, I’ve been reading a ton of books lately and decided I’d share some of what I’m reading with ya’ll, maybe to give you an idea for your next book purchase or just to give you an idea of what is out there.
First up-Ripper by Stefan Petrucha
First, yes, it’s a Jack the Ripper fiction. But I think what sets it apart from fictional Ripper stories is the use of both historical fact and engaging storytelling. Our protagonist is Carver Young, an orphan , which is almost mandatory for these sorts of stories. Carver lives in New York at the dawn of the 20th century. Events lead to his adoption by Detective Hawking, world famous detective for the Pinkerton Detective agency. Hawking wants to train Carver as his replacement, and potentially help him to find his father. But all is not as it seems when a string of murders leave Carver hunting a killer.
Who will like this book- If you love a good mystery, then this novel is for you. Classic detectives and detective novels form a core of the novel, with the author paying homage to some of the founding stories of the genre. Fans of historical fiction will enjoy the historical figures used, such as Teddy Roosevelt as the Chief of Police for NY city. Steampunk enthusiasts will also find something to love in this novel, as it incorporates light elements of steampunk technology, such as stun buttons and punch card computers.
Ripper is a great way to start your summer reading. It’s fast paced with great elements of suspense and drama. I hope you enjoy it.
